West Buckland is a small primary school which draws most of its children from the village, though an increasing number now come from nearby Wellington. We have known many of our pupils from birth and several children have parents and grandparents who attended here. The caring and inclusive family atmosphere, which is commented on by many visitors, celebrates children’s individuality, nurtures their strengths and supports them when they need help.

Our recent Ofsted report (December 2012) states that West Buckland is ‘a good school’

In particular the inspectors said that ‘attitudes to learning are exemplary across the school’. They praised the quality of the curriculum and the good progress that children make due to the way that teachers match work very closely to the needs of the children and give outstanding feedback to help them improve. The report recognises that our children are ‘very proud of their school’. We couldn’t ask for any greater recommendation than that!

Our school is housed in the original Victorian building with three additional classrooms. Two of these were erected recently and we are now enjoying teaching and learning in these bright, spacious rooms. We also have a cosy and well-stocked library and a‘log cabin’ housing a small kitchen and two group teaching rooms. Our beautiful field and wildlife garden overlook open farmland.

Children use both the village hall and the local sports centre for PE and all children from Yr 2-6 swim for half of each year at Wellington Pool. We compete in inter-school sports competitions in rugby, cricket, football and netball and all the children from Yr 1 take part in annual sports festivals. We make the most of our environment and take every opportunity to get out and about with the children. Our youngest children love their weekly ‘welly-walks’ and wrap up to enjoy the outdoors whatever the weather.

West Buckland School has a very active PTFA which raises considerable sums of money each year to enhance the children’s learning and enrich the curriculum. In particular, they are very supportive of our belief in out-of-classroom learning and regularly contribute towards transport costs, theatre and museum visits. The PTFA also organises a wide range of social events for children, adults and families, all of which help to build a strong school community. We enjoy strong links with our local church, WI and with West Buckland Pre-School. Each week, the oldest children from the pre-school spend an afternoon in school where they share activities with our youngest children, getting to know the school staff and starting to feel at home here.

The children all love this and we have had very positive feedback from parents.

We believe that West Buckland School offers children the best possible start to their school life and equips them to move on to the next stage of their education as independent, confident and courteous young people.
